[ Autographs ] (Nathan Bedford Forest) 1821-1877 Confederate lieutenant general of Tennessee cavalry and arguably the greatest cavalry officer in history, he raided and harassed Union forces and supply lines with great effect throughout the war. Manuscript telegram on South-Western Telegraph Company form, 1p. oblong 8vo., Grenada, Aug. 26, 1864 to Gov. Charles Clark. A secretarially- written telegram with good content: "Enemy still retreating in the direction of Holly Springs. Retain the remainder of your forces at Mason & other places for the present. I can arm the portion of your troops under Col Pettus. N. B. Forrest Maj. Genl" Once again, Forresthad the Yankees on the run! some edge wear and one toned spot, otherwise good.
