Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, June 22, 1863 A great content manuscript copy of General Order No. 49, issued by Ewell ten days before Gettysburg, concerning soldiers' conduct in theConfederate incursion into Pennsylvania. In part: "..In moving in theenemy's country the utmost circumspection and vigilance is necessary,and the safety of the army, and the success of the great object it has to accomplish, depends upon the observance of the utmost rigid discipline... all straggling and wandering from the ranks, and all marauding and plundering by individuals are prohibited... regulations to be established by the commanding Genl, according to the usages of civilized warfare... Citizens of the country through which the army may pass, who are not in the military serve.ce, are admonished to abstain from all acts of hostility, upon the penalty of being dealt with in a summary manner...'Very good.
