[ Autographs ] (David G. Farragut) A wonderful annotated edition of the book The Life of David Glasgow Farragut, D. Appleton & Co., New York, 1879, probable first edition. This copy was owned by A. A. Paymaster William Wallace Goodwin who served under Farragut in the Navy from late 1861 until 1866 and makes such reference on the front flyleaf. On page 414 Goodwin mentions a conversation he had with a Mr Freeman, who served on the bridge of Farragut's flagship during the Battle of Mobile Bay. he writes: 'Visited the Bienville after the light - I had a talk with him [Freeman] about the Admiral's order " Dawn the torpedoes, ring four bells to go ahead fast...' he also addshis note to text concerning the sinking of the ironclad Tecumseh: "I saw her go down & said to Harrison as I stood beside him, on the bridge 'My God, there goes one of our ironclads' he replied Impossible I answered 'You will find one missing when we get through..' Goodwin also describes meeting with the Farragut during the bombardment, quotes the admiral's remarks, and notes that the bombardment was so heavy that the Confederates were unable to reply. Other notes include his recounting of a pilot's description of his ironclad hitting a mine and shipping water, and so on. An interestingeye-witness accounting.
