Description:

[ Autographs ] JOHN LETCHER (1813 - 1884) Confederate Governor of Virginia, succeeded by "Extra Billy" Smith, imprisoned for several months following Virginia's surrender. Fine patriotic-content war-dateA.L.S. to CSA President Jefferson Davis, 2pp. 4to., Richmond, Sep. 24,1861 concerning a Confederate memorial. In part: "...I received...the enclosed proceedings of the Ladies Soldiers Aid Society for the Natural Bridge District'...The end they desire to effect is most praiseworthy...the object they have in mind, as those referred to, whofell at Manassas were personally known to me. The prompt manner in which they responded to the call of their country, their gallant bearing on the battle field, where they fell in the struggle for the independence of the South, give honorable evidence of their sincere devotion to a glorious cause. The memories of such men deserve to be perpetuated...a soldier's heart will know how to appeal to such an appeal...[the ladies] devotion to the Southern cause is as firm and enduring as the arch of that great bridge..." Light toning at folds, very slight soiling, very good condition.
