[ Autographs ] JOHN LETCHER Exceptional A.L.S. "John Letcher", 1p. 8vo., "Carroll Prison" [Washington], June 29, 1865. Letcher writes from the Old Capitol Prison where he was jailed for his role in leading Virginia during the Civil War, in part: "...I owe you many thanks for your kindness in writing to my family, and in sending them interesting papers. Owing to the want of mail facilities, we are compelled to depend on private hands...I am here without knowing the reason of my arrest, nor have I the least knowledge of the time when Ishall be discharged. I am well, cheerful, and equally comfortable as Icould expect..." With censor's initials at top, an excellent letter innear-fine condition.
