[ Autographs ] JOSEPH E. JOHNSTON (1807 - 1891) Confederate major general who led armies at Bull Run and Seven Pines. Johnston is perhaps best remembered for his stubborn defense of Atlanta and his resistance to Sherman's March to the Sea. Fine content A.L.S. "J. E. Johnston", 3pp. 8vo., Washington, Dec. 16, 1884 to Julius L. Brown. Inpart: "...I am very far from being indifferent to high office. On the contrary, I should like exceedingly to occupy one. But nothing in my position in the South gives me a hope of ever doing so. Then it seems to me that the President will not be much influenced by expressions ofthe wishes of communities in selecting the members of his Cabinet, butwill be more guided by eminent friends. Would it not be well to postpone moving in such a matter until it is known what southern men are thought for the cabinet and if they should be unsatisfactory to the south, then to suggest such as would be cheerfully accepted by ourpeople? For myself, the Senior Georgia Senator would be my choice for the highest place. Repeating that you have gratified my vanity and my heart...". Boldly written and signed, and in fine condition. Uncommon with quality post-war political commentary.
