Allen Rare late war-date L.S. as Governor of Louisiana on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Shreveport, May 23, 1865 As the Confederates' situation becomes desperate, Allen passes orders to a lieutenant in Texas. In part: '... Considering the turn affairs have taken, the impossibility of transporting stores over the roads on account of jayhawkers & deserters & etc. I think it advisable for you to abandon your enterprise at once, and make such disposition of what flour you may have on hand, as you see lit...' One clean tear into text, barely noticeable, repaired on verso, otherwise very good.
