Description:

[ Autographs ] James L. Alcorn 1816-1894 Confederate brigadier general who reluctantly joined the Southern cause and fought under Polk and Clark until captured at Galena. War date D.S. 1p. 4to., Jackson, Miss., Sep. 23, 1861 partially filled-in by Alcorn and signed again, directed to Lt. Col. S. G. French (later a Confederate major general) instructing that 29 kegs of "ammunition" be delivered to Canton. A pencil note at bottom, likely in French's hand, asks that a boxcar be set aside to store the ammunition, and mentions that ordersfrom the Governor of Mississippi are forthcoming. A most interesting document from early in the war.
