[ Autographs ] Henry W. Allen 1820 - 1866 Confederate brigadier general and Colonel of the 4th Louisiana, wounded at Baton Rouge and Shiloh before resigning to become Governor of Louisiana. Rare war- date A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., "Allen Battery" , Vicksburg, June 2, 1862 Allenwrites a letter of recommendation, in part: '..Lt. L. L. Henford... has been in the service of the Confederacy since the 4th day of May 1861... thoroughly drilled in all the duties of a soldier and eminently qualified for any position in the army ..his valuable services in aiding me in erecting & manning the Batteries for the defense of Vicksburg... I know him to be a brave soldier..." One pin hole at fold junction and light toning, otherwise very good. Two months later, Allen would be wounded at Baton Rouge, crippling him for life.
