[ Autograph ] Franklin Pierce A.L.S. lp. 4to., Lowell, Feb. 20,1848 to a gentleman. In part: "...I inclose herewith a letter from Mrs. Gardner R. French, wife of Lt. French Ist Artillery - late my aide-decamp and now in the City of Mexico in command of Macgruder's [sic] Battery..." Pierce makes flattering comments on the man's suitability for a higher rank, and closes with a good political note: ..I feel confident that we shall beat the Whigs in N.H. soundly at the approaching election... " Neatly mounted, very good.
