Description:

120. BUYING ARMS FOR GEORGIA A fine content A.L.S. of Mark A. Cooper, 1p. 4to., Springfield, Mass., May 4, 1860 to Governor Joseph E. Brown informing him that the previous day he had "...closed a Contract with the 'Ames Manufacturing Co' of Chicopee, for the purchase of the Sabers & belts, for Accoutrements for 2200 Muskets-for Accouterments for the Rifles & Cadet Muskets, & for the Cannon & Howitzers-These I have contracted to be Rifled, at 40 $ each. I have also bought 25 Cannon shot...to afford the Artillery Companies a few trials of each Gun. The Advantages of the Rifle Cannon & Howitzer are manifest, especially for Harbour defense. If the Rifiling the Cannon does not meet your approbation, Please advise me at Willard's Hotel Washington City..." Written only a year before the outbreak of war, one must wonder as to the intended use for these arms. No doubt they became quite useful the following year. Usual folds, otherwise very good condition.
