121. RESOLUTIONS OF THE 2ND, 13TH, 17TH & 20TH GEORGIA A fascinating manuscript document, 2pp. 4to., [n.p., n.d., c. July, 1863], a series of resolutions of purpose of four regiments of Georgia infantry and an exhortation to raise more troops to fill the depleted ranks of the regiments, likely written following Gettysburg where all the Regiments suffered heavy losses. Headed "At a meeting held the 14th inst. of the 2nd 15th 17th & 20th Georgia Regiments comprising Bennings' Brigade the following resolutions were unanimously passed", the resolutions read in part: "...1. That the war in which we are engaged is a just and right...that we are battling for our rights, our lives, and our Independence. 2. That the same principally which induced us to take up arms in the beginning prompts us now to persevere. 'If we then judged that the enemy intended to impoverish and oppress us, we now Know that they propose to subjugate, enslave, disgrace, and destroy us' There is no retreat but in Chains and Slavery. 3. That we will never consent to a peace which proposes a denial of [illeg.] and Independence. That to win Independence we are willing to brave all to endure all. 4th That we appeal to our government to lose no opportunity, and spare no effort to fill up the ranks of these Regiments reduced by so many battles..." The resolutions close with a poem which reads: "To every man on this Earth / Death cometh soon or late, / And how can man die better, / Than facing fearful odds / for the [illeg.] of his fathers / The Temples of his Gods". Moderate toning at folds, ink just a tad light but still distinct and legible, otherwise very good condition. $300-500
