119. GEORGIA NAVAL LIEUTENANT OFFERS HIS SERVICES TO GEORGIA Fine content A.L.S. of Lt. A. W. Habersham of the U.S. Navy, 2pp. 4to., Annapolis, Mar. 21, 1861 to Governor Joseph E. Brown of Georgia, offering his services to the state three weeks before the attack on Fort Sumter. He writes in part: "...Some weeks since I had the honor of informing you by letter that I was ready to serve my state and those joined with her in this their hour of need and begging that you would take much measures as you might deem proper to secure me a position in the Southern Navy. I deemed it my duty as a Georgian thus to report myself to you, the Gov. of George; but have not since then had any reply. Hearing that more important matters may have driven my case from your mind...I wish respectfully to state I am now ready and anxious to serve my state...I have closed up my business in Japan that I might be free to offer my naval experience to my country...I have also had the honor of writing to the Hon. A. H . Stevens [sic] upon this subject..." Heavy chipping to right margin resulting in the loss of some text, margin toned and dampstained, otherwise good condition. $300-500
