Description:

AMERICAN OFFICER'S FIELD JACKET WITH DRAFT BOARD ARM BAND

Field jacket belonging to an officer on the Headquarters Staff of a New York regiment with appropriate collar insignia. The jacket is of cotton twill construction with buttons secured with split rings. All button are included though three remain unattached. The jacket shows light wear and soiling, still appropriate for its age and use. On the left arm is pinned a 4" wide khaki printed armband issued by a New York draft board. It reads: "Long Island City NEW YORK LOCAL BOARD No. 173 N.A.". Overall very good. In 1917 Woodrow Wilson reinstituted the draft when only 73,000 volunteers enlisted out of the initial one million target in the first six weeks of the war. Draft boards were localized and based their decisions on social class: the poorest were the most often conscripted because they were considered the most expendable at home. Nearly half a million immigrants were drafted, which forced the military to develop training procedures that took ethnic differences into account.
