Description:

IDENTIFIED WORLD WAR I U.S. ARMY MEDICAL DEPARTMENT UNIFORM
Excellent light brown U.S. Army enlisted man's summer uniform tunic and trousers, both identified inside in black ink to Private William Battersby, assigned to Field Hospital 29 of the 5th Sanitary Train, in the 5th Infantry Division. His tunic bears a number of identifying patches and insignia; the left shoulder features the red diamond insignia of the 5th Division in velvet, with a blue embroidered circle bearing the letter "A" in the center, signifying the 3rd Army. Below this is a red felt honorable discharge chevron, and nearer the cuff are two gold overseas chevrons, indicating two tours of duty. Above the left breast pocket is a World War I Victory Medal ribbon bar with two campaign stars, while the left lapel bears a brass Medical Department button, with the right lapel button the "U.S." insignia. All other buttons bear the eagle and shield insignia of the U.S. Army. The inside of the collar bears a "Lamm Brand" manufacturer's label, with the inked identifying information inside the left breast. The trousers bear inked identifying information on outside of the right seat pocket within the trousers, along with a stamp identifying the pocket material as genuine sailing canvas. An index card describing the uniform and its owner was found in a pocket of the tunic, and tells us that William Battersby was born in Chicago in 1889, and enlisted in the Army at Columbus, OH on July 27, 1917. He was part of the American Expeditionary Force from June 4, 1918, to July 21, 1919, and was discharged on July 30, 1919. His unit took part in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne campaigns. Bears very minor soiling and expected age wear, else very good.
