Description:

GUIDON OF THE 105TH ARTILLERY BATTALION
World War I guidon of Co. C of the 105th Field Artillery. The wool swallow-tail flag measures about 25" wide and 19" along the hoist, and the far ends are tattered, probably from use. The cloth letter and numbers "105" and "C" are stitiched to the flag above and below the artillery symbol of crossed cannons. The flag had leather tabs which were use to attach it to its original staff -- now it is secured to a 80" finished oak staff topped with a decorative iron spear point. The 105th Field Artillery was attached to the 27th Infantry Division which incorporated New Yorkers and African-Americans. The great Somme "push" saw the 27th engaged in severe fighting along the Saint Quentin Canal Tunnel where it took heavy losses before cracking the Hindenburg line wide open. The regiment also fought at Meuse-Argonne (only the artillery), Ypres-Lys, and in the Somme Offensive.
