ALBERT I OF BELGIUM
(1875-1934) King of the Belgians from 1909 to 1934, when he died in a mountaineering accident. Noted for reform attempts in the Belgian Congo. Refused the Germans entry into his country during World War I, and subsequently held off the German invasion as long as he could. Superb association T.L.S. in French as King, 1p., 8vo., Brussels, July 29, 1933, a letter of friendship and congratulations to Peru's newly elected President, Oscar Benavides. Benavides, a general, was named by the Peruvian Assembly to conclude Luis Sanchez Cerro's term after his Apr. 30, 1933 assassination. Boldly signed, "Albert" in black ink. Countersigned by PAUL HYMANS as Minister for Foreign Affairs. Hyman served as the first League of Nations president. Very good, with mounting traces on verso of attached leaf.
