Description:

CHRISTIAN X OF DENMARK
(1870-1947) King of Denmark from 1912 to his death, and the last king of Iceland. Authoritarian ruler who opposed democracy, yet gained immense popularity for his stubborn refusal to acquiesce to Nazi pressure during Denmark's occupation. Christian famously rode his horse through the streets of Copenhagen daily, ignoring Nazi greetings and wearing Denmark's flag. D.S. as King in French, 1p., folio, Copenhagen, Jan. 8, 1934, a letter of friendship and congratulations to Peru's newly elected President, Oscar Benavides. Benavides, a general, was named by the Peruvian Assembly to conclude Luis Sanchez Cerro's term after his Apr. 30, 1933 assassination. Boldly signed, "Christian" and countersigned by Danish historian and controversial figure PETER ROCHEGUNE MUNCH as Minister of Foreign Affairs. Minor folds, light toning mounting traces on verso of attached leaf, very good.
