Description:

ACCOUNT OF ANTI-AIRCRAFT BALLOONS USED ON D-DAY
British officer's account of anti-aircraft balloons used to protect British warships while en route to the D-Day landing beaches and during operations there, 3pp. folio, apparently written while on station as an ongoing account. The pencil notes are written on the verso of three mimeographed sheets headed: "TOP SECRET" and showing the names and routes of various British warships. The diary/report, headed: "R.C.M. Balloons for Bombarding Ships Operation Neptune" sets forth a chronology of the movements of a vessel with the fleet, possibly a minesweeping vessel carrying a balloon, transit to the beaches on D-Day, the deployments of the balloon, and their results. Very difficult to read due to the writer's penmanship, but much can be made out describing their effectiveness, including an exchange of fire between the Ramillies and a shore battery. The sheets are in rough condition, with tears repaired with aging tape repairs, marginal tears, etc. With a mimeographed letter sent to minesweeping forces by their commander thanking them for their service thus far.
