ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S CABINET
A group of four pieces including HANNIBAL HAMLIN (1809 - 1891) A.L.S. as Vice President, 1p. 8vo., Hampden, Oct. 16, 1861 to Senator Solomon Foot asking if it would be acceptable for him "...not to arrive at Wash. until two or three days after the Senate shall convene. It may be that I can be there [Nov.] first as well before, but in case I shall desire to remain a little longer at home, I desire to know if you will be there to preside in case of my absence, and if it will be perfectly confident to you, for me to rely upon your being there?..."; WILLIAM H. SEWARD, A.L.S. likely as Secretary of State, 1p. 4to. on black bordered mourning letterhead, [n.p.] Dec. 22, [n.y.], to Edwin Stanton concerning a military appointment: "...If any one has merits and claims that entitle them to a commission I am sure that my shattered but unbroken Perry is not a one...". Offered with a clipped signature of his son and Assistant Secretary of State FREDERICK WILLIAM SEWARD; GIDEON WELLES, L.S. as Secretary of the Navy, 1p. 4to., [Washington], Jan. 26, 1863 to a correspondent in Boston explaining "...As Mr. Spalding was not entitled to a clerk after being detached your claim for travelling expenses would not be allowed by the accounting officers....". Toned from prior framing; SALMON P. CHASE, L.S. as Secretary of the Treasury, 1p. 8vo., [Washington] Jan. 27, 1862 to George H. Pendleton writing that he has "....never entertained a doubt of the loyalty of Capt. McGruder. The terms of his letter of resignation, coming from a man of honor such as he is known to be, preclude the possibility of such a doubt; and there can be no reason why the rents from his Wife's property should not be paid as usual...". Five pieces in very good condition.
