Description:

WILLIAM S. HERNDON
(1818 - 1891) Law partner and ardent political supporter of Abraham Lincoln, Herndon also helped educate the future president in the anti-slavery movement. He later wrote a widely popular biography of Lincoln. A.D.S. 1p. 4to., "Circuit Court of Menard County", Apr. 1856, a writ about a case regarding damages owed in the amount of $300.00, in part: "...The Clerk circuit Court of Menard County will herein issue summons...". Boldly penned and signed, very good. Along with a fine A.L.S. of JESSE WILLIAM WEIK (1857-1930), Herndon's co-author of Lincoln's biography, 2pp. 4to., Greenville, Ind., Feb. 18, 1909, to Charles Ellicock of Cleveland, in small part: "...I enclose herewith what the lawyers call a praecipe written by Abraham Lincoln June 5, 1840 [not included] ...At that time he was the junior member in the partnership with Major John T. Stuart in whose office he had been a law student...The endorsement of the clerk on the back was written by William Butler, a man who will be known as the one who had faith enough in Lincoln to 'grub-stake' him... when Lincoln landed in Springfield...". Mounting strips to edges, else very good. Two pieces.
