His brother was a mid[shipman] who did not pass his examination and is I think dull of intellect, but a fine sailor, & in all things connect[ed] Secretary Mason made him a sailing Master's Mate for me, and I write in the hope that you can induce the present Secretary Mr. Preston, to give him some petty officer's station..."; Attorney General EDWARD BATES, A.N.S. as Attorney General, 1p. 16mo. Washington, Mar. 14, [18]62 noting receipt of a letter; Secretary of the TreasuryWILLIAM P. Sprague in Albany announcing that the House had elected "...Hon Schu[y]ler Colfax Speaker......"; Postmaster General MONTGOMERY BLAIR, A.E.S. as Postmaster General on the docket of a letter most likely from New York Lt. Governor Robert Campbell, 3pp. 8vo., Albany, Oct. 21, 1861, who begs a paymaster position in the Army. Blair writes: "I hope Genl Cameron may be able to oblige Govr Campbell in the brother's request M Blair 25 Oct 61", offered together with a Brady cabinet photo; Postmaster General WILLIAM DENNISON, A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., [n.p.] Feb. 22, [18]76, concerning a marine appointment; Attorney General JAMES SPEED, signature on a small slip dated May 19, 1866 and adding "Atty. Genl.". Together, nine pieces.
