Description:

ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND MARY LINCOLN
Franking signature, "A. Lincoln" as President in the upper right of a portion of an opened envelope, addressed in another hand "[S]tanton Hospital / Washington / D.C.". Postmarked at Washington, D.C., Nov. 23, 1864 and also bearing an autograph note signed in the text by First Lady MARY LINCOLN. She writes in the lower portion of the envelope: "[Sen]t by the Author to be presented / by Mrs. A. Lincoln". Portion of verso of envelope with flap attached bears Lincoln's very rare full red wax seal: "SEAL OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES". Numerous folds and tears, portions missing at perimeter, some soiling and staining. Restored to one 14.25" x 6.75" sheet which displays both Lincolns' signatures and the President's wax seal. Stanton Hospital, named in honor of Lincoln's Secretary of War, was occupied from December 1862 until October 1865. Located on the square between H and I and Second and Third Streets, N.W., it had a capacity of 420 beds. To find both Lincolns' signatures on one item, along with Lincoln's presidential seal, is a very rare occurrence. Good condition.
