Description:

ABRAHAM LINCOLN
Partly-printed D.S. "Abraham Lincoln" as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Mar. 29, 1861, a promotion of Clarence Mauck to serve as "Second Lieutenant in the First Regiment of Cavalry". Co-signed by Secretary of War SIMON CAMERON. Typical folds, one passing through Lincoln's bold signature, engrossment just a tad light, else very good. CLARENCE MAUCK (1831-1889) had a distinguished military career. He was commissioned into the U.S. 1st Cavalry on Aug. 3, 1861, and on the same day was transferred into the U.S. 4th Cavalry in which he served for the duration of the Civil War. He would be wounded at Rome, Ga. on Oct. 13, 1864. Mauck led 4th Cavalry soldiers in the expeditions against the Cheyenne in Wyoming and escorted two hundred warriors and their families 600 miles from Nebraska to Oklahoma, narrowly averting a massacre when disarming them. Mauck also fought Indians throughout the Southwest.
