Description:

ABRAHAM LINCOLN
Early A.D.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p.], Sept. 7, 1850, in full: "Received Sept. 7, 1850 of Lewis M. Hays, administrator of Thomas P. Taylor one note for collection, for one hundred dollars, made by George M. Turley July 10, 1836, & payable to said Taylor. Sara Hays is to send me his letters of Adm[inistration] when I am to make the collection if I can. A. Lincoln". Not in Basler, however other listings in Basler trace the persons involved in this transaction. George Turley was one of the founders of Mt. Pulaski, IL, and had borrowed the aforementioned sum from Taylor in 1836. On Apr. 23, 1851, Lincoln wrote to Hays that he was bringing suit against Turley in October of that year. When the trial actually began in 1852, in a letter to Hays, Lincoln defended Turley on the grounds that he was impoverished and in poor health, and asked for a stay of one year for the court to determine if the debt was indeed forgiven. Both Turley and Taylor appeared in court a year later on Sept. 7, 1853, and claimed that Turley attempted to repay the debt in 1837 but that Taylor forgave him. Sara Hays was awarded the $100.00 without interest, and, according to documents around the case, Lincoln was given his retainer of $16.90! Very good condition.
