807. 1st NEW YORK MOUNTED RIFLE LETTER GROUP A good group of three war-date Union soldier's letters, total 10 pp. 8vo., written between Nov. 21, 1862 and June 3, 1865, in ink by Corp. Robert H.W. Hatchman, Co. H, 1st New York Mounted Rifles to his friend concerning military events and battle during the war, reading, in small part: "[Petersburg, Oct. 26, 64 describing the battle of Fort Harrison]...I am laying a short distance from our breast works...our works are four miles from Richmond...we are agoing to have a heavy battle...we will give them such a whipping they wont be able [to] stand another... on the battle of morning of the 29th [Sept.]...we went away on the extreme right of our line. The Tenth Army Corps moved forward in a line of battle in front of the enemy and charged their works while Kautz's Division of cavalry...the 18 A.C. moved...further to the right...& had quiet a number of men killed, wounded...our Regt covered the retreat of the 18th Corps...and the 10th A.C...this morning we went down and watered our horses...we was ordered to saddle up...the Rebel cavalry came out and formed a line of battle in front of our pickets...they turned our cavalry out...they fell back...we ca whip the daylights out of them...". Much more content. His other letters deal with camp life as well as social and military events that helped shape our nation. The original transmittal envelopes are included.
