808. ARTILLERYMAN'S LETTER A nice war-date Union soldier's letter in ink by Sgt. William H. Shelton, Battery L, 1st New York Light Artillery, 8pp. 8vo., White Oak Church, Va., June 10, 1862 to his cousin concerning having had enough of Fremont. In part: "...I have seen...Genl Fremont galloping over the field with body guard at his heels...like the tail of some comet. I have seen his jaded mules & raggt army. I have seen all I want to see of the man. His friends are pleased, in political circles, but...they are seldom seen in uniform. Why not transfer your adoration to...prim little Banks, he is surely Republican enough?...Cannonading greets our ears almost every day, our one division of the army opens 'in pace' on the other shore..." Shelton's grammar is slightly altered to aid reading. Shelton fought with his battery at Antietam and Gettysburg while during the battle of the Wilderness where he was wounded and captured. Minor soiling, else very good. $100-150
