Lot 806
806. 1st MARYLAND USA REGIMENT A good war-date Union soldier's letter in pencil by Pvt. Charles E. Leland, Co. B, 13th Mass. Vols., 4pp. 8vo., "Camp at Manassas, May 28, 62" to his father concerning serving in the Shenandoah Valley during "Stonewall" Jackson's 1862 Valley campaign. In part: "...we are at Falmouth we had to drill twice a day in heavy marching order, and we threw everything away that was not really necessary. We (Genl Ord's Division) got marching orders, and started on Sunday afternoon about four o'clock. We stopped at Acquia Creek Landing, 3 o'clock...am. We were all tired and rolled ourselves up in tents, and blankets, and slept till about eight next morning. On Monday...we embarked on transports, for Alexandria, which...we reached and in the afternoon...we could see the Capital from the boat, and that alone was enough to pay for my coming...we were routed out and marched through Alexandria to the depot, took the cars for Manassas and arrived there in the at half past ten in the morning...[Generals] Geary and Shields were here, but left today. That M[arylan]d 1st [USA] was a bully regiment, wasn't it. They fought well [against the 1st Maryland CSA at the battle of Front Royal stopping the Confederate advance]. Banks made a masterly retreat and the soldiers have more confidence in him than ever. We are to move tomorrow...I guess...Old [Stonewall] Jack will have to catch it...". Charles E. Leland was sixteen when he enlisted in Co. B, 13th Massachusetts Volunteers in 1861. For nearly a year and half, he served faithfully. Then, during the battle of Gettysburg, he was shot in the lower abdomen and killed on July 1, 1863. Overall very good. $100-150
