ZACHARY TAYLOR
(1784-1850) Twelfth President of the United States, "Old Rough and Ready" was also a hero of the Mexican War, taking Monterrey and defeating Santa Anna. Very fine content L.S. "Z. Taylor" as President, 1p., 4to., Washington, Oct. 26, 1849 to Congressman John A. Rockwell of Norwich, Connecticut: "...I have just received a copy of your valuable and instructing report on railroads, and routes between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. You will receive my thanks for your kind attention, and the assurance of respect...". Rockwell was part of a select congressional committee "to Whom was Referred a Joint Resolution to Authorize the Survey of Certain Routes for a Canal or Railroad between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans [of 1843]." This committee issued several reports concerning possible routes. The 1849 edition most have been especially timely with the onset of the California Gold Rush. Congress would finally enact legislation enabling the start of the first route in 1862 allowing for land grants that enabled the Union and Central Pacific railroads to join together in Utah in 1869.
