Description:

WORLD WAR II ROYAL AIR FORCE BASE SCAMPTON INDICATOR PANEL
A fine relic from the Scampton base of the Royal Air Force, a wood-housed electrical indicator panel which hung over the ante room and Officer's mess hall. This sign comprises a dark wood box with a glass front and a metal interior mechanism with holes for metal flags that raise and lower to indicate a location: 'ANTE Rm', 'MESS Rm' or 'ENTr'. Measures 7 1/4 x 4 3/4 x 3 in. At right is a push-pin mechanism to open the lid (currently does not open). A typed letter on Scampton letterhead [n.d.] affixed to verso reads: 'This wartime sign formed the entrance to the anteroom and the Officers Mess at the RAF SCAMPTON. It was adjacent to the dining room and most of the officers stationed at RAF Scampton would have passed beneath this sign...'. Scampton is perhaps best-remembered for housing the 617th Squadron which carried out the Dam Buster's raid in May, 1943. On the night of May 16, Gibson led nineteen Lancasters from Scampton. The bulk of the squadron attacked the Sorpe, Eder and Möhne dams, while others attacked the Schwelm Dam. Both the Eder and Mohne dams were breached, however eight of the Lancasters dispatched failed to return and fifty-three aircrew were lost. Light scuffing and wear as expected, and while not operational at present, certainly worthy of proper restoration.
