Description:

ENIGMA MACHINE ROTOR WHEEL
Especially rare ENIGMA machine rotor wheel recovered from a sunken German submarine. The wheel measures 3 in. in diameter and is one inch thick. It is comprised of several pieces screwed together, including a notched disc bearing the number 'A1751' and 'III', along with a metal ring whose outside rime bears the numbers 1 through 26. This rotor was one of several employed by the machine in setting it up to receive or send transmissions. There is a chip to the Bakelite wheel and a crack to the numbered wheel, else very good. This wheel originates from a Kriegsmarine ENIGMA machine which was destroyed intentionally or unintentionally during combat and recovered from within the hull of a sunken U-boat. Very rare! The ENIGMA machine was employed extensively by Nazi Germany during World War II, in all branches of the German military. It was considered so secure that it was used to encipher the most top-secret messages, but was nevertheless 'broken' by both Polish and British cryptographers.
