Description:

WORLD WAR I BRITISH RELICS (2)
A fine lot of a British military compass and clinometer, both from the World War I era. The compass is a type VIII ‘Verner's Pattern', a basic construction of a prismatic dry card compass with a brass body, featuring a mother of pearl dial, with both a momentary bearing lock and transit lock. The inside of the lid is marked with the number ‘32247'. The dial is marked in 5-degree increments on an inner ring, with a second outer ring displaying one-degree increments, with numbers reversed, marked with degrees on the exterior side. Marked on the reverse with the ‘B-L No. 69408 1917', also displaying the broad arrow. Contained within its original felt lined brown leather case, 2.5 x 3.25 in., with leather shoulder strap. The face of the case is engraved with the owner's name ‘LIEUT. G.L. BOWEN 2ND WELSH REGT.', and the broad arrow. The reverse of the case is maker marked ‘C & R BRINSLEY 1916'; WITH a vintage combined compass and clinometer, 3.5 x 3 in., maker marked on the face ‘Elliott Bros. London', and featuring a white card clinometer and green card compass. When stood upright the clinometer can be disengaged allowing vertical angles to be measured on the white scale. To read the compass, the clinometer card must be rotated out of the way by holding the device upside down. This will show the green compass card which can be read using the prism. Some scratching throughout, else fine. Contained within original felt lined brown leather case, 4.5 x 3.5 in., held closed by a leather strap, showing some signs of wear. Lacking the shoulder strap. Overall, very good.
