WORLD WAR I FIELD GEAR GROUPING (11)
Balanced collection of eleven field gear items from World War I, both British and American. Includes: U.S. Army gillette shaving kit, complete with handle, blade holder, and razor case (lacking razor); 'MILLS' twin magazine pouch for a Colt 1911 pistol; linen-backed 1:100, 000 scale map of Belgium, 33.5 x 28 in., marked at the bottom right 'WAR OFFICE, MAY 1915. ORDNANCE SURVEY, 1916'; black leather British memorandum book, 3.5 x 6 in., containing lists of soldiers, wounded, missing, awards, inventory of weapons and supplies, etc; American personal effects roll, 27 x 49.5 in. (fully opened), named to First Lieutenant C.F. Jones of the Motor Transport Corps, Repair Unit 307, Company A. The buckles attached to the two webbed straps are marked ‘Anchor Brand PAT. JAN.12.04'. One corner of the interior bears a faded maker mark but is dated ‘1918'. A single brown leather handle at the top for easy carrying; WITH a tan canvas grenade bag, 10 x 11 in., stamped ‘U.S.' on the front, closed at the top by three snap buttons, reinforcement stitching. Maker marked and dated ‘HH & Co 7-18', shoulder strap separately contained within the bag; WITH British haversack, 11 x 9 in., faded maker mark at the interior of the flap, but dated ‘1917'. The broad arrow mark is displayed on both the interior flap and the shoulder strap. The strap is also marked ‘D 71' on the right and ‘689' on the left; WITH what is believed to be a quartermaster's money bag, 7 x 8 in., the inside flap stamped with a ‘$' sign. The inside is separated into five sections, each marked with a denomination: ‘1', ‘5', ‘10', ‘50', and most interestingly ‘25'. A handwritten ‘A' on the front; WITH ‘heavy load' Y strap, possibly for a machine gun, maker marked and dated ‘Hussell 1918'; WITH belt that that Y strap attached to, 34 x 3 in., with brass fittings. Maker marked and dated on the interior ‘M.E. CO. 1918', further marked ‘S', ‘S30', and displaying the broad arrow mark; WITH a ‘Ken Lit' grooming kit, 9.5 x 15.5 in. (fully opened). A multi-pocketed, waterproof case. The tag at the bottom names this case to Roy L. Knecht, number ‘2244947', but does not give the regiment he was assigned to. The bottom pocket contains: two green wool infantry patches, heavily rusted mirror in its case, two sheets of ‘Army and Navy Young Men's Christian Association' letterhead, a blank postcard showing the river Garonne and the surrounding department, and a 10.5 x 15 in. French map depicting the Verdun, Argonne and Woevre regions on one side and all of Europe on the other. This side of the map details the ethnicity of the various regions. The top right section has torn away, while also causing a one in. tear at the top edge. Seven pieces, overall very good. SOLD WITH what is believed to be a cotton sun tarp, approx. 32 x 84 in., stained throughout.
