Description:

803. JOHN E. WOOL (1784-1869) Union major general who fought off the Confederates at Fort Monroe and occupied Norfolk. War-date A.L.S 2pp. 8vo., Troy, Aug. 17, 1864. Wool notes that if readers had heeded his previously published letters: "...we would [have] escaped the rebel raid recently in Maryland & Pennsylvania, which has reflected so much disgrace on those who directed our military operations in and above Washington..." Light soiling, else very good. Wood likely refers to Jubal Early's daring raid on the defenses of Washington. Light soiling, expertly inlaid, else very good. $200-300
