Description:

WOODROW WILSON
(1856 - 1924) Twenty-eighth President of the United States who passed sweeping reform laws, gave women the right to vote, and led the United States through World War I setting the ground work for the League of Nations. Partly-printed D.S. "Woodrow Wilson as President, 1p. oblong folio, Washington, Aug. 1, 1916, an appointment of "...Della C. Tolan...appoint her Postmaster at Mayville, in the County of Traill State of North Dakota..." Countersigned by ALBERT S. BURLESON. An uncommon appointment for a period when women did not enjoy the right to vote in most states (though Wilson would be instrumental in changing that situation). Light creasing and wrinkles, else fine condition. Matted with a portrait of Wilson.

Provenance: Woodrow Wilson appoints a woman postmaster
