Description:

WOMEN'S COLLEGE 'KU KLUX KLAN' YEARBOOK
Horrific 1913 women's college yearbook in which the students delighted in calling their student body the 'Ku Klux Klan' and naming their yearbook 'Ku Klux'. The 200+pp. 4to. softcover yearbook is covered in brown faux leather. It was issued by Weslyan College in Macon, Georgia. Founded in 1836, Wesleyan was the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women and remains in operation today. The yearbook's first page displays a 'night rider' with masked and robed hore galloping at night. Pages of portraits of the graduating class are preceded by an introductory page reading: 'The Ku Klux Klan of 1913' and showing a veiled woman within a skull and crossbones - long a symbol of the Klan. Another page, from the 'Harris Literary Society', features images from Joel Chandler Harris' 'Uncle Remus' tales, and another page has lyrics to songs supporting (pro-Klan) presidential candidate Woodrow Wilson, sung to the theme of 'Dixie'. Additionally, almost every page is headed: 'KU KLUX' with the lettering flanked by reclining skeletons. Content certainly reflective of some of the politics of the time. Covers worn at the edges, a few pages loose and spine cfover coming loose from binding, easily re-glued. Overall very good.
