Description:

SOVIET TEACHING AID SHOWING U.S. SLAVE AUCTION
An excessively rare Russian teaching aid showing the barbarity of American slave auctions, ca. 1970, designed to instill anti-American sentiment in Soviet schoolchildren during the height of the Cold War. The poster, 23 x 33 in., shows an incredibly depressing scene, including slaveowners analyzing the teeth and legs of a recently-imported slave, a slave mother embracing her two children on the auction block before being sold, a black woman holding a parasol above the head of her white female owner as she watches the auction, and a wooden post bearing advertisements, including: 'ONE THOUSAND NEGROS WANTED', 'LARGE NUMBER OF NEGROES WANTED OF BOTH SEXES', 'ACCLIMATED COTTON FOR SALE', etc. Far in the background, a steam-powered train passes through carrying thousands of bags of cotton picked by slave labor. The bottom margin bears the publishing information of a local printing house in Kalinin (later renamed Tver), and the lower-left corner indicates the posters are designed for Russian eighth graders. Curled, with some light edgewear, one light vertical fold with a 1 in. tear at bottom margin. Still quite presentable.
