Description:

WOMAN'S KU KLUX KLAN HOOD AND ROBE
Offered here is a very rare early style white cotton Ku Klux Klan hood, robe, and belt, ca. 1920s, made for a woman. The robe is full-length, with a white cape at the rear, interestingly only going over the left arm rather than both. Secured closed by six mother of pearl buttons at the front and a white rope belt at the waist. Sewn to the left breast is a 4.5 in. embroidered Knights of Camellia emblem. The hood bears two crudely stitched eye openings and a red tassel on the top. Also present is a red silk sash with a wreath-encircled compass rose at the center and the letters ‘F W'. Two early snaps are present to secure the sash across one's chest, with a gold bullion fringe at the ends. Lightly stained throughout, else very good. All three pieces are held within a white cotton carry bag. The Women's Ku Klux Klan, also known as the Ladies of the Invisible Empire held to many of the same political and social ideas of the KKK but functioned as a separate branch of the national organization, focused on the moral, civic, and educational agendas of the Klan.
