Description:

(WINFIELD SCOTT)
BENSON J. LOSSING (1813 - 1891) American engraver, journalist and historian. Import A.Ms., 2pp. Legal folio, Aug. 5, 1864, Lossing's notes from an interview the previous night with Gen. Winfield Scott concerning Scott's opinion on the outcome of the war. In small part: "...Scott has full faith in the final success of our arms - that Atlanta, Petersburg, and Richmond will be taken. He says the advantage of intrenchments is less than once over an open field...He alluded to two or three elements of strength possessed by the rebels. 1 - The Confederate debt. It is due to everybody at the South. If the cause fails everybody loses everything. 2 - The unanimity of the women, who influence the men. 3 - The certain destruction of the military and leaders of the Rebellion if it fails - not positive death of more than a few but with loss of property and position...He spoke of Lee with great sorrow. He had fallen into that delusion...State rights, and followed its lead, while his heart was with the old flag. He spoke of Lee as exhibiting a combination of excellencies - not really great in any. He and Lee loved each other...On the day after Lee resigned, Scott called all his officers together at Washington, took the oath of allegiance himself, and required all the others to do the same..." Tipped to a folder, otherwise fine.
