(1824 - 1886) Union major general severely wounded facing Pickett's charge at Gettysburg, also active at Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. War date A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., on "Headquarters Second Army Corps, Army of the Potomac" letterhead, [n.p.] Apr. 11, 1864 to William Blair Lord, the stenographer for Benjamin F. Wade's Committee on Conduct of the War, writing, in most part: "I transmit herewith, the records of my testimony as given by me I have modified the original record when the English my[?] too much disregarded and when I had not exactly expressed my ideas ... Two questions about the close, put by Mr. Odell were mitted. I have added them. To Same question [?]. I have had my Aide de Camp make copies of the corrected records. I have compared them carefully with him and they correspond. I enclose them. If you have no use for the originals or the copies and it deemed[?] not be improper, I should be glad when either set [is] returned. Otherwise you can destroy them... " Benjamin Wade, a Radical Republican openly hostile to the Lincoln administration, formed this joint committee in December 1861 to investigate various failings of the Union war effort including Lincoln's firing of Fremont, the loss at First Bull Run and the conduct of General George McClellan. Usual folds, else very fine condition.
