Description:

(WILLINK FAMILY)
WILLIAM VANS MURRAY (1760-1803) American lawyer and statesman. Very interesting content A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., "The Hague", Apr. 4, 1799, to Rufus King, the former Continental Congress delegate from Massachusetts then serving as America's Minister to the Court of St. James in Britain. Murray writes as the Minister to the Netherlands on behalf of Willem Willick, a wealthy Dutch investor who helped capitalize the Louisiana Purchase, regarding his sons who intend to tour London. In part: "...If it be in your power to promote their laudable pursuits I shall consider myself as much obliged...Considering the times it may not be amiss for me to vouch for the Politics of my young friends, which I can safely do...". Very good. A nice example of American diplomatic life in between the War for Independence and the war of 1812, and during the Terror of Revolutionary France.
