INVESTIGATING THE DEATH OF A CHILD IN 17TH CENTURY BRISTOL, MASS.
Manuscript D.S. "Jno Saffin Just." 1p. 8vo., [n.p., Bristol County, Mass.] Aug. 28, 1694, an order to the Sherriff, "Whereas I am Informed that Eliza[beth] ye Daughter of Joseph Lawdy is come to sudden & untimely Death... therefore in her Majestys Names to command you forthwith... that you Impannell & Returne a Jury of able and Descreet men of ye vicinay [sic, vicinity?] to make Strict Enquiry upon Oath how the sd Elizabeth came to her End ..." Endorsed in the bottom half by a member of the jury which concluded there was no foul play involved: "...ye Death of ye above mentioned child... do fine ye childs end: it's Death by a blow from a horse or horses in the neighborhood at or near ye door of Mr. Ebenezer Brinton, & is sopused [sic] to belong to Solomon Curtis on his daughters say..."The verso bears additional endorsements listing the members of the jury in the hand of Justice Saffin. Usual folds, light soiling, else very good condition.
