Description:

WILLIAM WELLS
(1837-1892) Union brigadier general, a brilliant cavalry leader who fought with distinction at Gettysburg on the third day, and repulsed Stuart's cavalry at the Battle of Hanover. Wells was awarded the Medal of Honor as well. Very rare war-date A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., ‘Head Quarters 2nd Brigade 3rd Cav'y Division', Oct. 15, 1864, to Capt. L. H. Barnhart, A.A.G. of the 3rd Cavalry Division. In part: ‘…I have the honor respectfully to request that Capt. M. A. Stone Brig Inspector of this Brigade may be directed to present to Alexa Va. to collect and forward to Harper's Ferry, the clothing, papers etc belonging to the different regiments of this brigade, which have been sent there at different times for storage. This property consists principally of regimental and company records and clothing (blankets, over coats etc) belonging to the enlisted men, and is at the present time very much needed by the command [as] the term of service of two of the regiments expire…It appears absolutely necessary that this course be adopted to procure this property, as the applications of Reg'. Commanders has so far failed…'. Very good.
