WILLIAM W. HUNTER
(1803 - 1892) Confederate naval officer, he tendered his resignation from the U.S. Navy and enlisted with the CSN on June 6, 1861, to rank from March 26, 1861. He served as captain in the Provisional Navy from Jan. 7, 1864, to rank from May 13, 1863 and commanded naval defenses on the coast of Texas from 1861-63. He later commanded the Savannah Squadron from 1863-64, assuming command June 1863. Scarce A.L.S. with integral address leaf, 1p. 4to., Norfolk, Sep. 10, 1841 to Capt. John McLaughlin, then heavily engaged fighting the Seminoles in Florida. He writes, in part: '...I am now fully authorized to confirm any act you may execute in realation to Patent, &c in Russia. Get Bidineo[?] to build a large Steamer forthwith. We will make an arrangement satisfactory to us both...I keep the Sec'y up to the mark. I will be in Washington in a week...with drawings...to make the contracts...Please write to me all the news...'. A few brief splits, else very good.
