Description:

WILLIAM TRYON
(1725 - 1788) Colonial Governor of New York and North Carolina, detested by the patriots for his rigorous administrations and especially for the destruction of Danbury, Fairfield, and Norwalk, Connecticut, with expeditions that he conducted in person. Scarce L.S. "Wm Tryon" as Governor of New York, 1p. legal folio, New York, Jan. 24, 1772 to the colonial assembly concerning a new tax on gunpowder. The letter reads, in full: "By an Extract of the King's Instructions to me, herewith transmitted, You will see I am required and directed to apply to You to pass a Law for collecting a powder Duty; and upon enquiring into the State and Condition of the Ammunition for the Defence of this Province. I find there are but few Barrels remaining for the public Service. I am therefore to recommend to You to frame such a Law as will correspond with His Majesty's Wishes and be most effectual in furnishing a constant and regular Supply of Ammunition." Tryon had arrived in New York to assume his gubernatorial duties in 1771 and quickly managed to convince the assembly to provide for improved defense of the city. This included a duty on gunpowder as well as the quartering of British troops in the city which helped increase tensions in New York the years immediately preceding the American Revolution. Minor partial fold separations, very lightly toned at margins, else very good condition.
