Description:

WILLIAM T. SHERMAN
(1820-1891) Union major general declared by the press to be "insane", he led his army in their March to the Sea, taking Atlanta, Savannah and Columbia along the way. Fine association signed book, The Armies of Asia and Europe, by Bvt. Major Gen. Emory Upton, New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1878, first edition, a report on major armies around the world. The front flyleaf bears a pencil inscription to fellow general AMBROSE E. BURNSIDE: "To General A. E. Burnside President of Joint Committee Army Representative[?] With compliments of W. T. Sherman July 8, 1878". Some toning to this page only, else very good. Perhaps Sherman wanted his old comrade to bone-up on his military skills: Sherman marched to Burnside's rescue during the siege of Knoxville.

Provenance: A military book inscribed to Ambrose Burnside
