EDWARD W. SERRELL
(1826-1906) Brevet brigadier general who, as Chief Engineer X Corps, designed and superintended the construction of the "Swamp Angel" battery that bombarded Charleston, and ushered in a new era in the science of engineering and gunnery. Scarce war-date A.L.S. "Edward W. Serrell / Col. Vol. Engrs", 1p. 4to., "Head Qts. Vol. Engineers Near Fort Welles [sic, Fort Wells originally known as Fort Walker]", [Hilton Head, South Carolina], Jan. 17, 1862, to "Captain Hascall / Asst. Qt. Mast E.C.", informing him that "...There will be wanted in addition to the Material for the pier of which you have already been informed the following Iron Bolts, 400, One inch round bolts with heads and nuts, 120, one & a quarter inch round iron bolts with nuts without heads...of very good but not refined iron. Also three washers for each bolt [totaling] 1560...". In very good condition.
