(1816 - 1887) Confederate brigadier general who led a brigade at Corinth, Vicksburg and Chicamauga.A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Lexington, Ky., June 23, 1877 to former Union General CARL SHURZ (1829-1906), then serving as Secretary of the Interior under Rutherford B. Hayes asking him to support his preference to fill a federal judicial vacancy. In part: "...some friends think a word from me may aid in a matter of public interest... The friends of Judge Ballard hope that his name will be presented so favorably that the President will appoint him to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Judge Emmons... the appointment of Judge Ballard would be excellent..." On the inside docket, Shurz has added a brief A.D.S., [n.d.] forwarding the request to the Attorney General. Usual folds, otherwise fine condition.
