Description:

GIDEON J. PILLOW
(1806 - 1878) Confederate major general, who fought at Belmont and was second-in-command at Fort Donelson from which he fled to avoid capture by Grant. War-date A.L.S., 2pp., 4to., Marietta, September 24, 1863, written from the "Hd. Qrs. Vol. & Cons. Bureau", defending his performance at the Bureau to another general. In part: "Your correspondence with Col. Dowd has been submitted, and I regret to see a disposition on your part to charge the officer in command of this Bureau with bad faith. You will see that there is not formation for any such intimation... I should feel surprised at your objecting to a proposition so beneficial to the common cause of our country..." Boldly signed, "Gid J Pillow, Brig Gen C.S.A.". Pillow's defensiveness may have been due in part to the blow upon his reputation following the debacle at Fort Donelson. Age toned with minor soiling and lightening, else fine.
