WILLIAM PORCHER MILES
(1822 - 1899) Confederate Congressman and military officer, served as a colonel on Beauregard's staff, and prior to the war was mayor of Charleston. A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Oak Ridge, Mar. 30, 1884, to an autograph seeker, in part: "...I regret that I cannot furnish you with any autograph letters such as you desire. I lost all my papers at the evacuation of Richmond. I have but a single letter of Mr. Robert W. Barnwell's & value it too much to part with it...Mr. R. B. Rhett Jr. is now living...& would no doubt answer any letter you might address him...Mr. R. B. Rhett Sen. is dead...Wishing your success in your efforts at collecting...". Robert W. Barnwell was a Confederate member of Congress, while Robert Barnwell Rhett, Senior, was a Congress member also from South Carolina, and know as the "Father of Secession". Fine condition.
